Villiers School students are encouraged to participate in regular physical activity, and we offer many sporting options to students, the most popular of which are hockey and rugby.

After School Sports Schedule 2022-2023 (Term 1)

  • Boys – Form I, Minor, Junior & Senior
  • Girls – Form I, Minor, Junior, Senior A & Senior B

Rugby is one of the core sports in Villiers and is very popular with our students. Villiers School offers rugby for both boys and girls across all age-groups with training taking place twice a week for most teams. We are in the envious position of having an excellent rugby pitch within the grounds of the school, gym equipment for our team conditioning sessions and fully fitted-out dressing room facilities.

Villiers’ rugby teams compete in Munster competitions at B-school or exempt-school level in Munster. This is advantageous to our players as it allows them to also represent clubs during the season if desired. Villiers field teams at U14, U15, Junior and Senior for boys and Junior and Senior for girls. The boys’ teams complete in the U14 Munster development blitzes, U15 McCarthy Cup B and Cleary Cup, Junior Mungret Shield and Cup as well as the Senior Mungret League and Cup. Both Senior and Junior boys’ teams enter the qualifiers for the Senior A Munster cup on a yearly basis.

Girls in Villiers compete in the numerous Munster Development Blitzes as well as challenge matches across Munster throughout the season.

In Villiers we are very proud of our past achievements which include being past winners of the Mungret Cup at Senior level, Mungret Shield at Junior level and the Cleary Cup at U15 level.

Villiers Rugby also aim to promote enjoyment and team-building by going on tours each year at various age groups. In recent times, the school have travelled to Italy, Wales, as well as a number of Irish destinations and attended the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Cardiff. Students are also brought to Munster and Ireland matches on a yearly basis.

Rugby coaching staff in Villiers are comprised of teaching staff and external specialist coaches. They are highly qualified with coaches holding necessary qualifications in both coaching, refereeing, strength and conditioning and player-welfare. Player enjoyment and participation is our top priority as is the promotion of safe play and player-welfare, skill-development and correct injury-prevention as well as strength and conditioning practices. Many of our coaches have played at a high level, representing clubs domestically and professionally worldwide. Villiers have also been privileged to have had numerous alumni represent their clubs at adult level within the All-Ireland League Division 1 and at underage representative level for Munster.
