Sports
Villiers School students are encouraged to participate in regular physical activity, and we offer many sporting options to students, the most popular of which are hockey and rugby.Extracurricular Sports Schedule 2024-2025
Hockey
Hockey is one of the core sports in Villiers and one in which our school has seen much success.
- Boys – Form I, Minor, Junior & Senior
- Girls – Form I, Minor, Junior, Senior A & Senior B
Rugby
Rugby is one of the core sports in Villiers and is very popular with our students. Villiers School offers rugby for both boys and girls across all age-groups with training taking place twice a week for most teams. We are in the envious position of having an excellent rugby pitch within the grounds of the school, gym equipment for our team conditioning sessions and fully fitted-out dressing room facilities.
Villiers field boys’ teams at U14, U15, Junior and Senior and girls’ teams at U14, Junior and Senior.
Boys’ Rugby
Boys’ compete in Munster competitions at ‘B’ school level. This is advantageous to our players as it allows them to also represent clubs during the season if desired. The boys’ teams complete in the U14 Munster development blitzes, U15 McCarthy Cup B and Cleary Cup, Junior Mungret Shield and Senior Mungret Cup as well as the Junior/Senior Mungret League. Both Senior and Junior boys’ teams enter the qualifiers for the Senior ‘A’ Munster cup on a yearly basis.
Girls’ Rugby
Girls in Villiers compete in the newly established Munster Girls Schools Junior ‘A’ Cup and Munster Girls Schools Senior ‘A’ Cup as well as in numerous Munster Development Blitzes as well as challenge matches across Munster throughout the season.
Three of our current students are playing in the current Girls’ U16 regional development squad, and one current student has been involved with Girls’ U18 regional development.
Coaching staff in Villiers are hold all necessary qualifications in coaching, refereeing, strength and conditioning and player-welfare. Player enjoyment and participation is our top priority, as is the promotion of safe play and player-welfare, skill-development and correct injury-prevention. Many of our coaches have played at a high level, representing clubs domestically up to Division 1 of the All-Ireland League (with Shannon and Old Wesley), and professionally worldwide (for Auckland Blues, Saracens and Munster).
Many Villiers’ alumni have also represented their clubs at adult level within the All-Ireland League Division 1 and at underage representative level for Munster. In the 2022/3 season we have had past pupil representation on both Shannon and Garryowen teams in the All-Ireland league Division 1A, the top non-professional league in Ireland. We have also had past pupils playing on a number of Division 1 U20 teams across the province.
