Leaving Certificate
Building on the foundation of the Junior Cycle, the Senior Cycle aims to provide a comprehensive, high-quality learning environment which prepares individual students for further education, apprenticeship or for immediate entry into the workplace.Students follow a two year course of study in preparation for the Leaving Certificate Examination, which is a long established concluding examination of post-primary education in Ireland, and is the main basis upon which places in third-level institutes are allocated.
To emphasise the academic importance of these two years, in-house examinations take place at the end of both the Christmas and Summer terms. Continuous assessment is also carried out throughout each term to enable the school, students, parents and guardians to monitor progress. Small class groups allow an easy working environment, maximising each individuals’ learning potential in a pleasant atmosphere. Our aim is to offer, within our resources, a broad curriculum that supports the academic and personal development of each student to maximise their abilities.
Villiers offers a broad range of subjects to cater for all student preferences. Students can study up to eight subjects, with the majority of students choosing to study seven. For the majority of students, Irish, English, Maths and a Modern Language are core and then they choose three or four choice subjects. Students who opt to study seven subjects use their non-class periods studying in the school library. Students also participate in weekly Physical Education and Religious Education classes.
In addition to their Form Tutors and Year Head, Leaving Certificate students are supported by the Academic Coordinator and Career Guidance Counsellor to ensure that they set and achieve realistic aims.
