Junk Kouture at Villiers School: Creativity with a Conscience
Since 2010, Villiers School has proudly offered Junk Kouture as a unique and exciting Transition Year subject—one that blends creativity, sustainability, and self-expression. Originally launched as an Irish competition, Junk Kouture has grown into a prestigious global event, with grand finals now taking place in fashion capitals such as London, New York, and Milan.
Under the dedicated guidance of our art teacher, Ms. Jean Thornton, Villiers students have designed and crafted over 60 show-stopping creations using only recycled and repurposed materials. Each outfit tells its own story, not just of environmental awareness, but of the incredible imagination and innovation of our students.
Over the years, our students have excelled in the competition, consistently progressing from the Irish Regional rounds to the National Finals. One of our standout achievements includes being placed in the Top 10 out of 3,000 entries—a true testament to the talent and dedication of our young designers.

Our Junk Kouture journey doesn’t stop at the competition. Villiers creations have graced the main stage of the Ploughing Championships, featuring in the closing ceremony performance. In 2022, one of our designs was selected to represent Ireland during Climate Week in New York City, while two other designs travelled to Coventry to open the UK City of Culture. Another proud moment came when one of our outfits appeared on the front page of six national newspapers.

These achievements speak volumes—but perhaps the most important impact of Junk Kouture is the personal growth it fosters in our students. Beyond developing artistic and technical skills, students build confidence, teamwork, communication, and a deep appreciation for environmental responsibility. It’s more than a subject—it’s a transformative experience.
Junk Kouture at Villiers continues to inspire and empower the next generation of creatives and changemakers. We look forward to many more years of innovation, success, and sustainability on the world stage.
