Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can international students attend Irish boarding schools?

Yes, international students are welcome to attend Villiers School. As part of our school’s commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), and as an international school, applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged.  A diverse and multicultural school environment promotes international-mindedness and encourages global citizenship.

What visa requirements are there for boarding school in Ireland?

Non-EU/EEA students must apply for a student visa through the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS). The application typically requires proof of acceptance from a recognised school like Villiers, along with evidence of pre-payment of school fees, financial support, accommodation, and private medical insurance.

EU/EEA students do not require a visa to study in Ireland.

How do Irish boarding schools compare to UK boarding schools?

Irish boarding schools offer high academic standards, similar to those in the UK, but often at a lower cost. In addition, the provision of children’s or young people’s education, and school or university education, is exempt from Value-Added Tax (VAT) in Ireland.

Ireland’s education system is known for its holistic, student-centred approach. Schools like Villiers provide a balanced curriculum, excellent university pathways and a warm, community-focused boarding experience.

Do international students need guardians in Ireland?

Yes. All international students enrolled in Villiers School must have a nominated guardian while studying in Ireland. For students whose parents do not live in Ireland, Villiers can recommend reputable guardianship agencies. Guardians provide pastoral support, attend parent-teacher meetings, and act on behalf of the family in case of emergencies. Please review the Villiers School Guardianship Policy for more details.

What are the health insurance requirements for international students?

Non-EU/EEA students must have private health insurance that meets Irish immigration requirements.

EU/EEA students should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for access to public healthcare. However, private insurance is also recommended for additional coverage.
