Villiers School hockey pitch development to commence in Summer 2025

Villiers School is delighted to announce the launch of a major new hockey pitch development project, following the successful awarding of Sports Capital Grant Funding. Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2025, with the goal of creating a high-quality, multi-purpose sporting facility that will benefit both Villiers students and the wider community. This exciting development marks a significant milestone for the school and reinforces its long-standing commitment to sports in our community.

The state-of-the-art pitch will serve not only the needs of Villiers School but also those of local organisations, most notably Limerick Hockey Club. The facility will offer a superior playing surface suitable for both competitive matches and regular training sessions, further strengthening the already close relationship between Villiers School and Limerick Hockey Club. Beyond hockey, the new pitch will be adaptable for a range of sports and recreational activities, ensuring its broad utility for years to come.

To help bring this ambitious vision to life, the school has launched a fundraising appeal. Supporters—ranging from alumni and friends of the school to local businesses and club members—are invited to contribute through the “Pitch-Side Legacy Plaque” initiative. This program offers donors the chance to have their names, business details, or club affiliations engraved on pitch-side plaques as a lasting legacy. In addition, there will soon be opportunities for pitch-side advertising, offering further ways to show support.

What sports are available at Villiers School?
Core sports at Villiers School include Hockey, Rugby, Basketball and Badminton, which are all played competitively against other schools in Munster. Students also have the opportunity to play Tennis at Limerick Lawn Tennis Club, and to join the school’s running club. In the summer term, students also engage in North Munster Schools Athletics, as well as trying Tag Rugby and Cricket.

What sporting facilities are available at Villiers School?
At Villiers School, we are delighted to have a range of sporting facilities, including a full size hockey pitch, which will be developed with a new playing surface in 2025, a full-size rugby pitch, a full-size sports hall, catering for indoor hockey, basketball, badminton and indoor soccer, as well as ample changing facilities, and a weights gym. We are delighted to also partner with Limerick Lawn Tennis Club to provide access to tennis facilities for our students.
