Transition Year Activities  - click on photos for more info...
Transition Year Programme is a compulsory programme within the school, designed to act as a bridge between the Junior Cycle and the Leaving Certificate. Following from the more structured and prescriptive learning experience of the Junior Cycle, the Transition Year is an opportunity to take stock, to explore new and different ways of learning, to expand the learning environment beyond the school walls into the wider community and the world of work, to lay a secure foundation for more mature decision making with regard to the Leaving Certificate and all that follows in the future.

The programme consists of core subjects, choice subjects, modules and one off subjects. There are outdoor pursuits, guest lectures, a fashion show, a drama production, work experience and a week-long trip to Achill during which the adventure section of Gaisce, the President's Award is completed. The other elements of Gaisce, community, sport and personal are completed during the school year. This award is taken to Bronze level, with the expectation that the Silver and Gold would be attempted at a later stage.

Along side core academic subjects, one finds modules such as Film Studies, Image Matters, Food safety, Green Schools, YSI, Enterprise(mini company), arts and crafts, origami etc. A comprehensive outdoor pursuits programme includes hiking, orienteering, rock climbing, kayaking, hill walking, sailing, high ropes, archery, caving, surfing, team building, canoeing, pony trekking and laser shooting.

All choice subjects available for the Leaving Certificate are taken in TY, in an eight week time frame to allow students an opportunity to sample and evaluate subjects, prior to choosing their specific Leaving Cert programme.
All of the above come together to produce a comprehensive, varied and challenging year which helps our maturing young adults make informed choices for their leaving certificate and beyond.
Our programme continues to evolve based on the needs of TY, combined with student feedback. The TY team of tutors meet weekly to plan, evaluate and review, continually looking at ways of enhancing our excellent programme.
