T.Y Metalwork Module

As a 4th year student in Villiers you have a range of fascinating modules to try your hand at, including Photography, Redsokz, ECDL and many more. One of these is Metalwork.

Metalwork is a 8-10 week module run by Ms. J Murtagh in the art room (25).
The module began under the ''Arts Councils in Schools Scheme'' in 1992, driven by Mr. T.S Hardy - Our former Headmaster. It has now also developed into Nightclasses after school for the paying public. Only €140 pays for a 10 week course.

There are usually 2 different groups per week (with 12 people per group) working, until the 2nd half of the year begins and then the other students have their turn. However sometimes there are individual projects or smaller groups…It all depends on the ideas produced and the class at hand!
During this module you explore techniques used for centuries like:
Repoussé: - hammering the metal from behind to create a shape in relief. E.g. Tutankhamen's death mask.
Forging: - heating the metal and beating it shape.
Soldering: - joining pieces of metal together by melting a metal filler (solder) and holding until dry.
The metal used is copper sheet which is largely recycled from year to year.

Sometimes Ms. Murtagh gives you a theme to work on…e.g. Marine Life (which can be seen in a number of panels displayed in the art room). Or alternatively, you and your group have a complete free reign to the wonderful world of Metalwork! Don't be too heartbroken if the latter is not true, it is actually harder to have full choice, as the design of the project can sometimes take far too long. Lack of choice makes the design so much faster.

Get an idea and run with it - Good luck and enjoy!
