The primary responsibility of the school chaplain is to provide spiritual support to staff and students in the school. This involves bringing a 'faith-presence' to the role in the school. The chaplain works with the staff in carrying out this role within the school community, which extends to the wider parish community. This role varies from teaching religious education, organising prayer services, school retreats, meeting students on an individual basis and working closely with the pastoral care team in the school.
There is a specific mission towards the spiritual care and faith development of the entire school population and the promotion of apostolic activities within the school. The chaplain works with the pupils, their teachers and parents to build up a school community permeated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and love. The chaplain has responsibility for establishing and developing a relationship with each pupil with a view to being available to them as spiritual guide and faith friend. Special support is given to pupils experiencing any form of difficulties. This contact may be at the initiative of the chaplain or of the student. This means meeting them on a one-to-one basis with a view to addressing their spiritual and pastoral needs in a non judgmental way. To contact the Chaplain: Tel: 061 451447 Email - revjack@eircom.net
Liturgy Of Remembrance
On Wednesday 9th November Villiers Chaplain held a remembrance service for the intentions of Villiers students, staff and the wider community. St. Mary's Cathedral was the venue for the service. Mr McNair was joined by Bishop Trevor Williams, Rev. Stan Evans and Father Frank O'Connor. The ambient lighting and music provided a sense of calm and enabled reflection and prayer. The music, arranged and provided by Samantha Shorten, Diarmuid DeFrates, Cian Egan-O'Brien and Aimee Birmingham, was carefully selected and beautifully interpreted. On entering the Cathedral each member of the congregation was given a stone and asked to think of someone important to them. This was a very tactile experience and it was with reluctance that many of us placed our stones/loved ones into the centre cairn midway through the service. Readings were given by Samuel White, Nicole Cumiskey and Ciaran Cahill while Mr McNair led the congregation through prayer and guided reflection and the tender reading of Autumn Churchyard. This service was an opportunity to take time out of our busy lives and remember those who have gone before us and those who are still suffering or in need. The fact that it coincided with the passing from Autumn to Winter and all that goes with it, beautifully added to the service. Those who attended the service hope that this becomes a yearly occurrence.
