Special Educational Needs in Villiers

We have a bustling Special Educational Needs Department in Villiers with five full time qualified Special Educational Needs (SEN) teachers with backgrounds across the academic curriculum catering for students from Form I to Form VI. We aim to support each student in a caring and meaningful manner and operate from the Resource Centre, a suite of small, purpose built rooms in the New Building.

The SEN team provides support for students in a range of areas including general literacy and numeracy, subject choice, subject specific support, project support, study guides, assistive technology, exam technique and third level options.

How do students access SEN support in Villiers?

All incoming students' parents/guardians are contacted in the spring prior to their entry in Villiers and asked to inform the school of any SEN. The SEN team are always in regular contact with subject teachers, Year Heads and Form Tutors. Formalised testing is carried out in the School and any student or parent with concerns is welcome to make an appointment with a member of the team to discuss this.

Most students who participate in Resource or Learning Support classes 'give up' at least one subject in order to attend lessons during this time. This means, for example, that a Junior Cycle Student may take only ten 'exam' subjects instead of the eleven on the standard timetable. The SEN team also engages in team teaching, particularly with the Maths Department.

Other facilities

We provide guidance for students on the following, should they meet with eligibility criteria:

Reasonable Accommodations for State Examinations (RACE)
Disability Access Route to Education (DARE)
Links with National Educational Psychological Services (NEPS)
EAL - Language Support

Villiers provides additional support language classes for our overseas students, via the EAL programme. These classes, taught by Ms. Ryan, ensure that our overseas students are well equipped to partake fully in both the classroom setting and state examinations.
