Villiers School

The attached photographs show the form V Home Economics class presenting the cheque for the Shelter Boxes to Mr Joe Lynam of Limerick-Shannon Rotary Club.  Tom Jones and Mike Kearsley accepting a cheque for €3,000 towards their “building week” in Haiti later this year with HAVEN and some snapshots of their trip to Haiti last year.  Happy to report that the 41 houses they were involved in building last November are still standing.  Further details for HAVEN are available on www.havenpartnership.com

Like all good Irish men and women, the students and staff of Villiers School are very aware of the recent earthquake and devastation on the island of Haiti.

With various fund raising activities, especially coffee mornings organized by Form V, they have raised a large sum of money to help. 

In conjunction with Limerick-Shannon Rotary Club, they have managed to buy 4 shelter boxes. These boxes contain all the necessary items for a homeless family to survive for a year – including tents, sleeping bags, cooker, dishes, tools etc. These are now very necessary after the destruction of so many houses.

Over 5,000 of these Shelter Boxes have already been transported to the island by the Dutch Air Force.

The president of Limerick-Shannon Rotary, Mr Joe Lynam visited the school and was delighted with the student’s efforts.

The shelter boxes are a very tangible form of help, the students could actually see how their money was going to help.

Two members of staff in the school, Tom Jones and Mike Kearsley have brought home to the school the needs of the Haitians having gone in 2009 to help build houses with HAVEN.  They are now once more being helped by the Villiers Community to go again later this year to help this poorest of islands to start a slow recovery.  For any donations to this cause, please feel free to contact the school.
