The Junior Certificate examination is held after the completion of a three year course of study across a variety of core and choice subjects. The Junior Cycle caters for students in the 13 to 15 year old age group and students normally sit for the examinations at the age of 14 or 15. It provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learnt over the previous three years and provides a base from which to embark on further educational demands.
The examination is offered in the following subjects, at either Higher or Ordinary levels. For curriculum information for each of these subjects please click on the subject or visit the DES website.
Our primary objective is to maximize a student's learning experience in the school. In first and second year, students are formally assessed at the end of the Christmas and summer terms. In addition, less formal class tests, in all subject areas are a regular occurrence.
Furthermore, in junior years, students' application is monitored by a system of 'Effort Marks,' awarded by teachers at regular intervals throughout each term. These help to ensure that individual students remain focused on their academic work throughout the year. They also help to ensure that behaviour in class is conducive to facilitating learning.
