Over the past number of years the Green Schools Committee at Villiers had been extremely active. This activity and effort was rewarded last year with the presentation of a Green Flag to the school.
There are several areas in which flags are awarded and the committee chose 'Litter and Waste' as the first one to tackle. There were a great number of changes instituted including the replacement of the existing bin system with a new, sorting system where recycling, general and composting are all separated before being disposed of; our antiquated skip system was changed and the overall amount of waste leaving Villiers for landfill had more than halved. There has been a massive increase in our recycling output also and we have created a compost area where all compostable materials are taken; the compost is then used around the school site. In addition to this we have initiated a composting system for the school kitchens as well.
Having been awarded this flag the committee has decided to take on the 'energy' flag next. Significant headway has already been made: energy saving LED light bulbs has replaced the existing fluorescent ones and a small wind turbine has also been installed.
The aim of the committee is to make Villiers a greener and more energy efficient environment, we are very pleased to have got to where we are today but we will continue to work to ensure that we are doing the maximum possible to make Villiers a greener, more eco-friendly school.
To date we have :
     a) converted the ICT suite to LED lighting.
     b) fitted light sensors in the sports hall.
     c) fitted light sensors in all classrooms.
     d) began installation of Led lighting in corridors.
     e) continue upgrading insulation in dormitory areas.
     f) fit velux windows in corridors, thus increasing light and heat.
     g) install low energy lighting along the front avenue.
    h) reduce wattage of outside spotlights.
     i) fitting of a solar panel to our wind turbine.

Our first committee meeting of the year was held on 29th November, where powerpoints were presented by students outlining progress on 'green initiatives' throughout the school. These included our progress on our work towards our energy flag, our continued upgrading of our vegetable patch, an overview of the infrastructural work, our bicycle initiative and our new printing and photocopying system within the school.
