Debating/Model United Nations
Villiers has a very strong connection with the Model United Nations, having taken part in many international conferences over the past six years. Furthermore, students take part in many debates across a broad spectrum of areas from Irish to French and English and History.
Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.
The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or NGO in a simulated session of an organ (committee) of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United States National Security Council, has been included in Model United Nations, even if they are completely unrelated to the UN or international affairs as a whole.
Each year, under the guidance of Ms. J. Woods and Ms. A. Gowing, approximately 15 students travel to a conference in Europe for a 3-5 day session. Ms. Woods and Ms. Gowing prepare the students for the conference and assist with fundraising for the events. Participation in MUN conferences is unparalleled and while ultimately highly educational also provide students with access to the culture of their peers and to international education systems. Please see the photo-bank for images from some of these conferences.
